Archives of Terror
The Archives of Terror is a collection of records kept during the Stroessner regime. Stroessner ruled Paraguay for 3 decades - the 1960's, 70's and 80's. A coup in 1989 finally ended Stroessner's dictatorship. In 1992, Paraguay established a democratic government and became the Republic of Paraguay.
After much searching, the records kept during Stroessner's cruel reign were discovered. These documents recorded arrests, torture, and death carried out by the police under the direction of Stroessner and his regime. Now available to the public, the archives are a reminder that we should never take freedom for granted.
The Archive organizers hope that something like this will never happen again in Paraguay. For more information go to Memory of the World: Archives of Terror. Further information is also available at BBC News Paraguay's Archives of Terror. Efforts are underway to catalog the records through the cooperation of Paraguay Kansas Partners program, involving library students from Kansas and Paraguay receiving training and volunteering time to assist in this vast project.
